ABOUT matthaeus

Matthaeus Szumanski was born in Denmark, but moved to the United States as a pre-teen.  After earning an MFA in film production at UCLA, Matthaeus began working as an assistant editor for documentaries, then on many Disney DVD behind the scenes featurettes.  Later work as assistant editor include the feature films, “Mannsfield 12” and “Traci Townsend,” as well as the documentary feature film, “Blackfish,” which was short-listed for an Academy Award and helped end the captive-orca program at Seaworld.  

His career as editor began at BET, where he edited two seasons of the successful stand-up comedy TV series, “Comic View.”  He then edited behind-the-scenes material for the first two “Lord of the Rings” films. He also edited Mobisode versions of the hit Fox show, “24.”  Since then, he has edited short films, feature films, (including “The Unbidden”) documentaries, commercials, music videos, and gallery art videos.

Matthaeus is also an active and prolific writer-director-editor, having made 33 short films which have played in festivals around the world. One of these, “Jornada del Muerto," is in the permanent collection of the American Museum of the Moving Image.
